Our Thanksgiving was pretty low key this year (apparently pretty much everything is low key when you add heart failure into the mix). The kids got the week off of school and Brittney went home for a week. James and I didn't schedule any clients for Thursday or Friday and I only work in the evenings on Tuesdays, so we only needed childcare for Monday and Wednesday.
Jojo took all six of the kids on Monday. She (all on her own) took all six to Walmart to pick out their Christmas presents from her. She gave them each a budget and let them pick whatever they wanted within that budget. Then she took them to McDonald's for ice cream and to play in the play area. According to Jojo, they were all perfectly behaved; they stayed together in the parking lot, did exactly what she told them in the store, didn't complain about toys they wanted being out of their budget, quietly sat and ate their ice cream, played very nicely in the play area (including having Megan offer to take Laura), left without complaint when Jojo told them it was time to go, and didn't get upset at all about handing their presents over to Jojo at the end so she could hold on to them until Christmas. Apparently Jojo brings out the best in our children :) They all had a fantastic time and it made it so much easier for me to be at work knowing that my kids were with someone who loved them and enjoyed spending time with them! Thank you Jojo!!! :)
Wednesday we had one of our back up babysitters watch the kids - my friend Stacy's daughter, Leilyn. Leilyn watched the kids when Ashley couldn't this past summer and they all love her. The kids ended up being happy that I worked two days because of the time they got to spend with Jojo and Leilyn. Laura even decided Jojo has made it on her very short list of people she loves and now voluntarily goes to her :)
We didn't have anyone over for dinner on Thursday. We stayed in our pjs all day. It was heavenly :) Rob and I minimized the work to put dinner together. I cut up all the veggies (celery and onions) for the stuffing the night before, Megan made the jello part of our traditional jello mold (the kids picked mango flavored) and I did the other half of it (basically cream and sugar and gelatin) Wednesday night. Thursday we made the stuffing, cooked the turkey, and made mashed potatoes. We heated up corn and green beans, and baked pillsbury biscuits. Rob had coconut chess pie (bought at Kroger) for dessert and the kids had chocolate pudding pie. I skipped dessert :) I am trying to cut out sugar from my diet as much as possible.
Laura LOVED the chocolate pie. She even picked up the plate and licked it :)
Grandma and Grandpa K sent a package for the kids, with instructions for them to open it the day after Thanksgiving. We let them open it a day early. It was a DVD of tons of classic Christmas videos. After dinner, the kids went upstairs and enjoyed their turkey comas (although none of them actually ate almost any dinner as they filled up on the veggie tray and fruit trays we had out all day) and the DVD.
