Helen Keller aka Megan

Every year at our school the third grade does a project called "Living Library" wherein each student is a historical character. The students spend weeks studying their individual, then compile a report. They decorate a poster at home and at the end of the project, they dress up as their character and give a short presentation on them. Parents and family are invited to one showing and then the present it to the other students.

Megan chose Helen Keller. We've had a lot of fun learning about her and discussing sign language and braille. Megan made her poster on Monday, with only a little help from me :) Today was the presentation, so we got up early, helped Megan get into her outfit (which was pretty basic - I did not go all out, which I worried about until I got there and discovered that most costumes were pretty basic - although a few parents went WAY beyond what I did - George Washington had a full wig made of cotton balls and a very fancy outfit), and got the other kids up and dressed as well. Rob took Meg and Kylie to school. The rest of us finished getting ready and headed off to see Megan. Megan did a wonderful job!

Photo Shoot with Nona and Papa

As my parents are leaving (tomorrow) to serve an 18 month mission in Vladivostok, Russia, we arranged a professional photo shoot with them as a Christmas present. It was freezing outside and the kids didn't smile nearly as much as normal, but we still got some pretty nice pictures :) My favorites are the one of Beth on her own, the one of the kids kissing Eva, and the one of Rob kissing my forehead :) Here are a few of the best pictures ~

Beth's Date with Kiki

Kiki was unable to come out to dinner with us on Beth's birthday (she was practicing for a group skydive), so she asked if she could take Beth out to dinner another night. Wednesday, the twelfth was "the night". Here is Beth's description of the night ~

First Kiki came over to pick me up. She gave me a Dora map and said "we are gonna go and find Dora". I said "no" because we wasn't. And then we left into Kiki's car and I played on her phone. We was at shopping at a toy store and there was stuffed animals too. I picked out a Hello Kitty with a little mask things - remember when you go to sleep, you put it on your face and it protects your face from light? And then Kiki took me out to dinner at Chick-fil-a. I got chicken nuggets and fruit and apple juice. Kiki let me go to that little slide thing inside and that little playroom inside and I played. I did a little puzzle that was in the playroom on the wall. And then we went back in the car. When Kiki was driving I asked could I sleep over. Kiki said we had to call my mom and ask. Kiki called Mom and gave the phone to me and Mom said yes. I was excited. Then we went to Kiki's house. When we got there, Nona and Papa gave me a present. It was a Russian ABC book. I watched "The Snowman" movie with the little boy who flied in the air with the snowman and then I went to bed. Kiki gave me a shirt to wear to bed. It was a t-shirt. I couldn't sleep very well because I wasn't very sleepy. When she was asleep I woked her up cause she said if I need anything to wake her up. I told her I was hungry, so she gave me something to eat. And then, almost in the morning, I woke her up and told her I was thirsty and she got up and gaved me some juice. Then I knewed it was morning, but Kiki didn't, so I woked her up. She said "just five more minutes". Then I woked her up and said I needed a drink. Then Kiki went to work and Nona and Papa made me breakfast. I ate oatmeal. Nona made it. For dessert, we had ice cream and some popcorn too. Me and Nona watched a movie. Then I colored my Dora map from Kiki. I watched Umi-zoomi. Me and Nona packed up all my stuffs and I had a little red blanket that I loved at Kiki's house. And then Mom camed over to pick me up.

It was the bestest birthday present ever from Kiki that I got. Because I got to have a sleep over and I got some ice creams and I got to color my map with little kinda crayons that I love, but Nona said I couldn't keep them. And that was how it went.

Love from Beth to Kiki

There's No Place Like Home

Since this past weekend was a three day weekend, I took the opportunity to drive (with Eva) down to Houston and spend a few days with my friend Allison. We had a wonderful time talking and spending time together. Eva, however, did not have a wonderful time. She fussed and fussed and was cranky all weekend. She refused to sleep for longer than a few minutes at a time unless the tv was on with the sound up. It took me a while to figure out what was wrong. She missed her sisters and brother. She missed the constant noise. She missed the attention. When we got home, I handed her to Kylie and Eva's face lit up :) Then Jack got to hold her and she smiled and smiled. I got pictures of that one ~

Sometimes I feel bad that my kids don't get more individual attention. With five small children, their one-on-one time with me and Rob is limited. Eva's only two months old and yet she already has developed enough love for her siblings that she doesn't like being away from them, even for a few days. I can understand. I loved spending time with Allison :) It was wonderful though to walk in the door and be greeted by "MOMMY!!!!" (Jack), "Mommymommymommymommymommy!!!" (Beth, who in her exuberance ran right past me), "MOM!!! You're home!!!" (Megan), "MOM!!! You're home - can I see Eva???" (Kylie), and "I'm so glad you're home!" (Rob, who did a great job and practically cleaned the whole house while I was gone). I love being a mom and wife :)

On Tuesday, Beth, Jack, Eva and I went grocery shopping. Jack and Beth sat in a "car cart" (a cart with a car in front for kids to ride in) and Eva was in a carrier on my chest. Since we went during the day, there were a lot of older shoppers at the grocery store. We got a lot of smiles. One lady came up to me and said "Enjoy them while you can. My babies are 60 and 56 and man, I miss them!" I am so lucky to have each of my little ones! Rob had a meeting tonight, so I made dinner, had the kids help set the table, then got everyone's plates ready and ate dinner with Eva and Jack on my lap. Yes, dinner was lukewarm by the time we finished and I didn't exactly get time to enjoy any of the food, but I think back to nine years ago, when we were pregnant with Megan, but didn't know it, and think how lucky I am to have a room full of children :) I wouldn't trade it for the world :)

Finally, a picture of Eva and I doing homework ~

Baby, It's COLD Out There!

Spring has sprung, fall has fell, winter's come and holy heck is it cold this year!!! Winter down here tends to mean temps in the 60's and 70's, with occasional forays below freezing, which don't usually last for more than a few days. Apparently Mother Nature decided to mix things up this year and it's been cold for several weeks now, with only a few days of warm weather here and there. Yes, I am aware that there are many other areas that we have lived that are colder. The difference is that in those areas, we expected it and were prepared for it. Seriously I think the kids only have about 5 cold weather outfits and the coats we have above size 5 are much more light weight.

This year for Christmas, Rob and I gave my parents a professional photo session with their grandkids (all of whom happen to be our kids). As my parents are leaving for their mission in Russia in a few weeks, we scheduled it for last weekend. Fortunately, we caught the tail end of the "warmer" weather, so it wasn't as cold as it could have been, but it was still pretty nippy. We'll have to see how the photos turn out. The kids were not very happy about being outdoors. They were troopers though and all of them sat or stood where they needed to and looked at the camera :)

We let Kylie wear a vest in the pictures as her shirt was wet. We decided to have all the girls wear purple and the boys wear green, but Kylie's purple shirt was dirty, something we didn't discover until about 45 mins before we had to leave to get the pictures taken. Other discoveries that day included that our washing machine takes over 30 mins to wash a load of laundry and that a shirt, even by itself, takes more than 10 mins to dry in the dryer. Rob brought Kylie's shirt down, clean but very damp. We weren't sure what to do. Rob suggested driving with the window down and Kylie's shirt hanging out of it so it would dry. Considering that it was in the 50's, I didn't think that was a good idea. We offered Kylie two "squares" on her reward chart if she would put the shirt on and without hesitation, she agreed. We put the vest on over it to keep her warm (the vest was purple too) and she was thrilled that she got the chance to earn extra squares.

The day we got our pictures taken also happened to be Beth's 5th birthday :) We had her party just after Christmas so that my siblings could be there, but we still wanted to make her day special. Rob got up early with her and they read for a while. We've been trying to spend more quality one-on-one time with each of the kids and that was a good opportunity. We let Beth decide where she wanted to go for dinner as our family tradition is to go out for dinner on each person's birthday. Beth picked a restaurant called BJ's, which is a brewhouse that makes fantastic homemade sodas - and the food is really good too :) Nona and Papa came with us. After dinner, Rob and I took the kids to Half Price Books, a used book store chain in our area. Beth got to pick out a present there and she picked a box of preschool worksheets and materials. Then I took the kids next door to Party City so Beth could buy something with the money she got from Grandpa and Grandma K. She picked a package of about a million (only a slight exaggeration) stickers.

When we got home, I thought since the kids were all still dressed in their coordinating outfits and their hair was still done, that I would take a few pictures of my own. That didn't work out very well. Jack threw a fit and refused to get anywhere near the camera or his sisters, and Eva, who had been extraordinarily cooperative up to that point, decided she had had enough.

The next day it started snowing as we were driving home from church. The kids loved watching the snowflakes fall and ran to the window once we got home.

Kylie created a new hat that she modeled for the camera ~

That evening the kids asked if we could light a fire. As Rob lit it, he commented "doesn't this just make you want to grab a spear and put on a loincloth?" Strangely, I have never had that reaction to fire.

For dinner we had sausages and carrot sticks. We opted out of cooking them over the fire, but did give in when the kids asked that we stick them on the end of forks instead of using buns.

For dessert, we had marshmallows of course :) It may look like the fire is out, but there were plenty of coals ~

While the four older kids and I roasted marshmallows, Rob and Eva discussed tactics ~

Brittney and her sister, Becca, came over and roasted marshmallows with us. We had hot cider too.

The next day, Beth decided to be a "bampire". She came up with a whole outfit and declared herself "Bampire Beff" ~

Jack got in on the dress up action and wore his train hat while playing on the computer ~

Beth came up with another outfit that she insisted I take a picture of ~

Pictures of the Swingset (for Grandma and Grandpa K)

I somehow forgot to post a whole folder of pictures! Grandma pointed it out to me when she asked what the swingset looked like. Sorry! I thought I had posted these!

The first is Rob holding Eva. She reached up in her sleep and grabbed hold of his pocket. Every time I tried to pick her up, she tightened her grip :)

And here are a few pictures of Jack and Eva. She patiently endures all of Jack's poking :) He loves her so much!
