The girls in the dresses Kiki got for them in Panama
Every 4th of July we make a cake and cover it with whipped cream and then let the kids decorate it with red and blue berries. We usually use strawberries and blueberries, but this year we used raspberries instead of strawberries. The kids love it - although we always have to make sure we have lots of extra berries because at least half of them end up in the kids' mouths :) Jack even "helped" this year, well, he sat next to the girls and ate raspberries until he decided to go for the cake and grabbed a handful of the whipped cream, at which point we decided he was done helping! Kylie and Beth put on the blueberries. They put each one on individually and pushed it into the whipped cream. Megan did the raspberries and would take a handful and sprinkle them over the cake, then squash them in.

Megan lost her 3rd tooth!!!

One of Megan's teeth has been hanging on by a thread for over a week now. Every time we tried to pull it out, she wouldn't let us though. I have no idea how it didn't fall out by itself - she even ate corn on the cob last night! Well today it was even more loose (didn't know that was possible). After her bath tonight I wiggled it and then popped it right out! Meg was quite surprised - I think she really thought it was going to hurt. She was so excited that she lost one of her top teeth! She ran in to show Kylie and Beth the gap and then came back to get the tooth to show them. At first she couldn't wait to put it under her pillow and even write a note to the tooth fairy, but then she realized that if she did that, she couldn't show Daddy her tooth (Daddy is out with "the guys" tonight watching a UFC), so she asked if she could wait to put it under her pillow tomorrow night. She wants take the tooth and pretend it's still there, then "pop" it out and surprise Dad :)

We took a few pictures of my little toothless wonder (complete with hair that dried right out of the tub) with her newly lost tooth (don't worry Mom and Christy - no blood) . . .

Our 4th of July

Well, I got strep again, so Christy took the girls to see the fireworks while Rob and I headed to the bookstore for a book on homeopathy. We've made a lot of changes to our lifestyle in the past six months or so such as eating organic and whole foods. The more we find out about it, the more sense it makes to us. I was put on antibiotics in OR and I knew that if I went to an urgent care center (the dr's were closed for the three day weekend by the time I finally figured out what it was), they would put me on a stronger antibiotic and I really wanted to find some alternative that worked. We found a book on homeopathy and it had several suggestions as to homeopathic remedies that might help me.

After going to the bookstore, Rob and I picked up our friend John (who is staying with my sister for the weekend) and took him to the airport to pick up his wife, Priscilla. They have stayed at our house several times and we love spending time with them! On the way back to Christy's house, we stopped and picked up a few things for me to try. Within a few hours, my throat was doing so much better! It didn't hurt nearly as much and the swelling had almost disappeared! We will definately be trying homeopathy again! We still want to use modern medicine, but hey, if there is a solution that is easier on your body and works just as well or better, then I'm all for it!

Anyway, the girls had so much fun with Christy (who they call Kiki)! Beth, however, did not like the fireworks much. During the 20 mins or so that the fireworks were going off, she kept saying "I don't LIKE fireworks, Kiki." She loved the bounce house and the snowcones though! After the fireworks, the girls had a sleep over at Kiki's house, which they loved!

Of course, since the girls were gone, Jack decided that last night would be a great night to wake up every hour and get up for good at 7am, so Rob and I didn't really get a break, but the girls had fun!

Rob left for the catering job around 11am and I put Jack down for a nap shortly before he left. Around noon, Jack and I went over to pick up the girls and bring them home. As a treat, we stopped at Sonic and each of the girls got their own strawberry slushy thing. We then drove home, where I vacuumed the house (it really needed it! It's amazing how messy things get when I am sick!) and cleaned up strawberry slushy off the kitchen floor and the dining room carpet. We took it easy for an hour or two because all the kids were tired and the girls watched Beauty and the Beast, their current favorite movie (this changes weekly).

After resting up, I wanted to do something fun with the kids, so we decided to make cookies. The girls helped make the dough, then I divided it into three sections, rolled it out for them, and let them go wild with the cookie cutters. We ended up with some interesting cookies, but the girls had a blast! Jack ate frozen blueberries instead of making cookies.

As the cookies were baking, Christy, Priscilla and John showed up with stuff to make for dinner. Christy and John ran out to get root beer and ice cream for root beer floats and Priscilla and I stayed with the kids and frosted cookies. We had been planning on using red, white and blue frosting, but Megan wanted green instead of white, so we had red, blue and green cookies instead.

Kylie did NOT feel like smiling for the camera . . .

We had hamburgers and hot dogs for dinner, with corn on the cob, potato chips, potato salad and a green salad. Cookies, of course, were for dessert.

Following dinner, I discovered that Jack had smeared frosting all over the side of his head, so I had all 4 kids take a quick bath and then tucked them in bed. They all fell asleep pretty quickly. Christy has two papers to write for her current class tonight and John and Priscilla needed to check on their dog, so the three of them left just after 9. Rob is scheduled to get home after midnight, so I decided to catch up on my blog :)

I hope all of you had a wonderful 4th of July! I don't feel like I did much to honor the holiday, but I guess that the freedom to raise my children in relative safety and the ability to put food on the table for a celebratory meal is honoring the sacrifices made to keep us free. I'm so thankful for all those who gave up so much to found this country and to keep it free! God Bless America!!!

Sliding down the slide and plans for the 4th

Sorry I've been MIA. I've been feeling under the weather. I think I just never took the time to recuperate from having strep and from the energy it takes to go on vacation with 4 small children. I've been taking it easy and am starting to feel a bit better.

The girls are so excited for the 4th of July! Roanoke has their fireworks on the night of the 3rd every year, so we are planning on attending that tonight. They also have $2 BBQ, free snowcones and bounce houses. We're meeting up with Christy, her friend John (who's wife is getting in later tonight - they have stayed with us several times and we love hanging out with them!), and another friend of Christy's, who is bringing her 2 year old son and her husband, so we will have lots of people to visit with :) Tomorrow Rob is working noon to midnight at a catering gig at the Westlake Country Club. We'll miss him! We will probably just hang out with Christy, John and Priscilla. We may hit more fireworks tomorrow night depending on the kids' response to the ones tonight. We usually have the kids decorate a cake with whipped cream, strawberries and blueberries, but I think we'll do that on Sunday.

Jack crawled all the way up the stairs on his own last weekend. I'm sure he could have done it sooner, but we always have the stairs gated off and we've never let him try. He figured it out pretty quickly!

A few pictures of the kids playing on the climber (taken last Friday after I had already posted my blog for the day) . . .

Jack figured out how to slide down the slide on his own on Tuesday. He started climbing to the top of the slide last week, but would sort of get stuck or fall (I caught him) as he didn't know how to get down. He now climbs up and as soon as his hands hit the top, he belly flops down and slides backwards to the bottom. He LOVES it! He laughs and laughs each time and he will do that for 15-20 minutes at a time.

We got three barstool-height chairs from Christy that fit our kitchen counter. The girls love sitting on them to eat breakfast and lunch. Jack doesn't want to be left out, so I pull his chair over next to them. Thank you for the chairs Christy!

Look at me Mom!!!

This first picture is looking down at my lap and I sat at the computer the other day. It's actually fairly normal for my lap to look like this and I almost never have an empty lap :) I'm so glad my kids love being near me though! I wouldn't trade it for anything :)

Today Kylie found her "pocket shirt" and put it on so that she could carry blocks around the house. She filled it with as many blocks as she could fit, then asked me to take a picture of her. Meg wanted in on the action as well :) If you look closely, you can see that one of her top teeth is just about to come out. It's so loose that it's crooked. She doesn't want us to pull it out though - she's decided we need to buy more apples so that she can eat one and have her tooth come out in it (that's how she lost her first tooth).

The other day I heard Jack complaining and so I went into the playroom to check on him. He was stuck on the bridge between the big slide and the climber. I didn't know if one of the girls had helped him get up there or if he had done it himself until this morning, when I caught him scooting up the slide on his own! He was so proud of himself!

Good-bye Oregon (Saturday)

We flew home from OR on Saturday afternoon, so Saturday morning Rob and I packed everything up and prepared for the flight home. Grandpa made pancakes for breakfast (and Grandpa makes great pancakes!) so that the kids would have something more solid than cereal to eat before we left. All the kids toys were packed, so I was afraid they might get bored, but Grandpa and Becca did a great job of entertaining them. Megan and Kylie hid in Becca's room and Grandpa would pretend to get them through the door. Becca's room has two doors and at one point Megs and Kylie were plotting with Becca at one door while Grandpa snuck in through the other door. Kylie turned and saw him and said "M-m-m-megan!" Meg screeched and they both took off :)

We looked at the clock and discovered that it was past time to go, so we loaded everyone in the car. Grandma made us a sack lunch so we didn't have to buy lunch at the airport. It was hard to say good-bye ~ it had been such a wonderful visit! We are so glad we had the chance to take the kids (and to go ourselves) out to OR and that they were able to get so close to Grandpa, Grandma and Becca (and Quincy and Cindy)! It had been so long since the last time we got to see them and although we really try to form bonds through pictures, webcams and phone calls, there just isn't anything like actually spending time with family! I wish we all lived within 50 miles of each other so that we could see each other more regularly! Hopefully we'll be able to make it back out to OR soon and we really hope that Grandma, Grandpa, Becca, Quincy and Cindy will be able to come visit often as well! We miss you guys!!! Thank you so much for everything!!!

Kisses for Jack

Ready to go!

Visiting family and friends (Friday - and a recap of Tues night, which I forgot)

I completely forgot about Tuesday night. Tuesday, Rob's best friend Wayne took the day off work and drove up to Vernonia. We got to spend some time with him that afternoon (I can't believe I didn't take pictures! I was pretty out of it though) and we drove around Vernonia reminiscing. We met up with another of Rob's friends from high school, Damien, and his wife, Serissa (sorry if I spelled that wrong!) for dinner at a local restaurant, then the kids and I went home to bed and Rob went out with Wayne, Damien, and two other friends, Deric and Justin, to shoot pool and talk.

Friday we loaded everyone into two cars and headed out for some visits. Our first stop was Stacy's house (Stacy is Rob's cousin). She was having a yard sale that day, so both her parents, Rob's Uncle Greg and Aunt Barbara, were there and so were all of her sisters. We were so excited to get to see everyone! It had been 5 years since we had seen most of them and Stacy we hadn't seen since our wedding reception! The kids played in the backyard with Stacy's and Kristy's (another of Rob's cousins) children and had a blast! Beth loved the little animal statues that Stacy had in her garden and went around petting each one. Megan still asks when we are going to go back and play with her cousins again.

After visiting with the Lemmons, we grabbed lunch and then headed over to visit with Great Grandma and Grandpa Knowlton, who live in an assisted living facility nearby. Although we had seen them almost every month while we lived in ID, the last time we had seen them was when Megan was about Jack's age. They had never gotten to meet Kylie, Beth or Jack. One thing that made this visit really special as well is that since Rob's father is an only son, Jack is the first great-grandson with the last name of Knowlton. We had a wonderful visit! Grandpa was so excited to see us and to meet each of the kids! Grandma didn't remember us very well, but she told some old stories and listened to Megan tell her about her loose tooth. Megan, Kylie and Jack visited with an older lady in the next suite over for a bit too (with Grandma - as in Rob's mother, not Great Grandma) while the rest of us talked. We are so glad we got a chance to see them again and to introduce our children to them!

Following our visit with the great grandparents, Becca, Rob, the kids and I headed off to try and see if we could squeeze in a few more visits. Our first stop was Deric's house so that we could meet his wife, Jessica and their two children. We had seen pictures, but hadn't gotten to meet any of them. We lucked out and they were home and we had a wonderful time getting to talk to them! Deric's mother even was able to come by, which was great because Rob spent so much time over there during his high school years and then before he left for ID that he was really close to her. The girls loved playing in their backyard and were disappointed when we had to go.

Our next stop was the Aultmans. They lived next to the Knowltons years ago and remained close to them as the Knowlton kids grew up. Rob considers them surrogate parents. We lucked out there as well as both Randy and Nancy were home and we spent a wonderful hour visiting with them and catching up on what had been going on with them and their children. The girls ran around in their yard picking clover and looking for ants to squash (a favorite pastime since we moved to TX) and Jack tasted all their rocks (one of his favorite things to do). Becca's day was made when Beth plopped down on her lap (Beth tends to take a while to form attachments and hadn't let Becca hold her up to this point). It really made me wish that we lived closer or made more money or something so that we could visit much more often!

We then headed back home to spend our last evening with Grandma, Grandpa and Becca. Grandpa and Rob got to spend some time talking and Grandma taught me how she makes spaghetti sauce from scratch (it turned out really well! We're going to have to start just making our own sauce!) and Beth and Grandma and I made dinner.
