Texas Igloo

Megan has been making plans to build an igloo for quite a while now. I keep telling her that we don't really get enough snow here to do that, plus it warms up so quickly after cold spells that I doubt an igloo would stick around longer than a day or two, even if we got enough snow to build one. A friend posted this link ~ http://www.squidoo.com/milk-jug-igloo?utm_source=google&utm_medium=imgres&utm_campaign=framebuster ~ today on facebook and Megan is thrilled that she now has a way to build an igloo in Texas!

We're going to start collecting milk jugs apparently, although the one in the picture used over 400 milk jugs, so it may take us a while (we go through about 2 a week, meaning it will take us about 4 years). So if anyone has milk jugs they wouldn't mind donating, we'd appreciate it! :)

Earthquake! Or, no, even Harlequin isn't that fat ;)

Last night (Saturday) Rob and I were sitting in bed talking when we noticed the bed was behaving oddly. My first thought was that Harlequin (Rob's incredibly large cat) was rubbing up against the bed, but it seemed the bed was moving a bit more than it would have if that was the case, especially as our box spring sits on the floor (so small children can climb onto the bed and so that small children don't fall as far when they inevitably fall off the bed). Then I noticed that the dresser and tv stand were shaking too. It lasted for maybe 30 seconds, at which point Rob and I looked at each other and wondered if it had been an earthquake.

We turned on the tv to a local news station, but they weren't saying anything about it. We checked internet news sites, but there was nothing there either. So we did what we should have done in the first place; we checked facebook. Who needs news stations when you have facebook? I don't even bother checking sports any more as I know I'll see who won in fb status updates well before any other site announces that information. Sure enough, several of my friends had posted that they felt it too, ruling out our alternative theories that perhaps a humongous plane had landed at the nearby airport or that for some reason someone decided to drive a very, very large truck slowly (and silently) down our street.

It turns out there was a 5.7 magnitude earthquake centered about 4-5 hours (by car) away from us and it was big enough that we felt it. Our kids were very disappointed that they slept through it. Apparently a lot of people slept through it. We slept through the second one that happened around 3am.

I have to say that of all the natural disaster issues I thought we might face in TX, earthquakes were not one of them. It was kind of cool though as it wasn't bad enough here to knock anything down or to hurt anyone. It was much worse in OK, where apparently they have had multiple earthquakes over the past few days. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who lost homes and possessions because of this (I haven't heard of any deaths).

I was excited to get to add experiencing an earthquake to my list of natural disasters I've experienced. This list now includes: a volcano erupting (we lived in Seattle when Mount St Helen erupted), multiple hurricanes (including one whose eye passed directly over our house - so cool!), blizzards, major floods, wildfires, tornadoes, hail storms with lemon sized hail, ice storms, and now an earthquake! I suppose you could add drought and heat waves to that too.

Soccer Pictures

Megan and Beth watching Kylie's game ~

Eva crawled and walked everywhere and got into everything she could :) ~

Meg, Beth, and Jack got tired of sitting and played tag instead ~

Until Jack mistakenly tagged Beth's face with his head and gave her a black eye ~

A couple of pictures of our goalie :) ~

First Pigtails

Pictures from Halloween

Even though it was the day after my surgery, we still made it to the trunk or treat. I sat in the back of the minivan on a blanket and handed out candy. Our Angry Birds theme was a big hit :) Megan was the bomb bird, Kylie was the red one, Beth was the blue one and Jack was the yellow one. Rob and I were the pigs and Eva was an egg.

After trunk or treating was over, there was a parade of costumes. Meg carried Eva.

Kylie marches by the car ~

Megs and Eva ~

Beth and Jack saw me taking pictures and left the parade to come say hi (Megan had been a bit ahead of them and was already back with me) ~

Eva joined me in the back of the van while the kids attacked their candy. As usual, we let them eat as much as they wanted that night, then 1 hour before bedtime, we confiscated the rest of the candy (there wasn't all that much left anyway) ~

Our Superstar Goalie

We finally caught some of Kylie's saves on video (she's wearing the lime green shirt) ~

Videos of Eva

Eva's thrilled that she has now figured out how to open and close drawers. It keeps her entertained for hours :) You can also see one of her little nests that she creates every night by collecting everything she can and shredding anything made of paper ~

She loves playing peek-a-boo with the bathroom door ~
